North Deck Gazing - Sculptural Collection

Abstract wooden geometric shape sculptural collection

The North Deck Gazing series grew from a simple but absorbing ritual — the building of two viewing platforms on my property in Western Victoria, one facing north, one facing south. Constructed specifically to study the heavens and observe the creatures of the night, these decks became unexpected windows into a world that most people sleep through.

This sculptural collection represents a broad observation of the night sky and the creatures beneath it. Each piece shaped by hand from the prunings of trees found on the property in the Wimmera region of western Victoria. The raw material itself carries the character of the landscape, and working with it feels less like construction and more like a conversation with place. The result is a sculptural collection rooted in both the physical and the atmospheric qualities of a very particular corner of rural Australia.

Living remotely in the Wimmera, I have been drawn increasingly into the rhythms of the after-dark world — the movements, sounds, and survival strategies of species that conduct their lives entirely beyond daylight. There is something quietly astonishing about this parallel existence. These handmade wooden objects are an attempt to capture that sense of discovery; to hold, in small and humble forms, the wonder of a landscape that never really sleeps.
