Notturno - Wooden Sculptures

This body of work draws its main inspiration from the increasingly threatened Australian biosphere. These 160 meticulously carved individual wooden sculptures feature both abstract and heavily stylised faunal representations. Assembled into 10 framed collections they are heavily influenced by model making, Japanese netsuke and jewellery design. These carvings show a unique depiction of the creatures and the environment of Western Victoria.

I’ve long been been fascinated by the ability of Australia’s nocturnal species in to survive and thrive. My recent work re-flects this fascination. Notturno draws it inspiration directly from the unique Australian ecosystem. The resulting carvings have a certain museum quality, reminiscent of the collections of naturalists in the 19th century.
