Above from Below - Nocturnal Activities

Detail image of Above from Below, nocturnal activities

This collection of works titled Above from Below is a continuing study of nocturnal activities within a low-relief format. Capturing the quiet drama of nocturnal activities — the movement of stars, phases of the moon, and the subtle shifts of the night sky — each piece reflects a sustained and devoted observation of the celestial world.

They represent celestial observations gleaned over a two year period, recorded and reinterpreted through hand-worked timber and found materials.
As with other bodies of work, I have maintained a primary focus on recycling and minimal construction. Each sculpture is built from reclaimed and repurposed materials, keeping the environmental footprint as modest as the forms themselves.

Highly-crafted, these objects are framed under glass, which not only guarantees protection, but imbues each piece with a much desired museum-like quality. Small in scale yet rich in detail, they invite close and unhurried looking — a kind of private contemplation of the night.
