PLASTICA

The works under the heading 'Plastica' are constructed using a wide range of techniques from gluing to screwing. Whilst quirky in nature, hopefully they convey a message that we must act now for the preservation and protection of all global species.

From a philosophical point of view, the idea of using recycled and repurposed plastic objects to made meaningful art is problematic. Plastics of many varieties have overwhelmed our planet globally and become the scourge of man and beast alike.

Petrochemical companies seemingly produce plastics in vast quantities and with apparent impunity. So, whilst l use various plastics to produce these small sculptures, there is hidden message in each piece - an important message that we as global citizens must push back against petrochemical companies around the world. Ironic certainly, but also poignant too...

As with my other sculptural works in wood, the underlying message is about responsible recycling and reuse. It could argued that the aim should be to stop using toxic materials altogether. However, the world as we know it would grind to a halt...every medical, car, plane, clothing and container manufacturer would collapse overnight. Thankfully, sensible innovation such as multi-purpose usage, dissovable plastics in salt water and other inventions are breaking new ground.
